General Management

The General Manager of any company, large or small, has historically been seen as the foundation for its business success. They own the P&L and are responsible for all aspects of a business (e.g. a division or a market) inside of a company. They are skilled generalists who have earned their stripes by having a broad and sometimes deep understanding of what it takes to deliver a product, service, or solution to the market, with quality and profits hitting the bottom line. They are usually on their way to the C-suite and are an indicator of “bench strength” in a company’s succession plan.

As we see it, these General Management leaders also have entrepreneurial (often self-described as intrapreneurial) traits that enable them to run a product line, market, or division as a “mini-CEO.” This is an ability that many companies should emphasize as they expand into new markets or seek to add end-to-end focus to a key initiative or new product. This trait is also an excellent indicator of a well-rounded GameChanger and emerging star.
